Why do English speakers find interest in learning Bulgarian?

Your motivation to learn Bulgarian is essential for your progress

Let me tell you a real story.

Back in 2012, a friend of mine, a British Software specialist who at the time was working in Bulgaria, told me:

" No way! It's not possible to learn Bulgarian so fast and easy as they say!"

"But, hey.... wait a minute, James,"   I said, "there are so many foreigners who speak Bulgarian. If it is possible for them, it's possible for anyone, even you, James.

There must be a way...to finally learn to speak Bulgarian fluently, don't you think?"

I was so disappointed by his reaction!

His mindset about learning Bulgarian wasn't motivational at all, and it worried me.

What I did was try to help my friend change his mindset and motivate him by discovering that he was not the only one struggling with Bulgarian as a foreign language.

I  started researching Social Media posts and groups, connecting my friend with fellow learners.

What had motivated other people to learn Bulgarian?

And it was then when I came across Benny Lewis, a recognised expert on  learning languages quickly and effectively, famous for his TED Talks

And an effective method to become fluent in any language in 3 months.

What I found out at that time, when online learning resources in Bulgaria and the language apps were not so widespread,
was that the reasons for learning Bulgarian were one and the same. It depended on the learners' personal situation, profession and curiosity about a new language.

Among the learners of Bulgarian were groups like:

Tourists who fall in love with Bulgaria

👀👉 tourists who visit Bulgaria for the first time and who fall in love with Bulgaria, Bulgarian food, culture, folklore, nature.

👀👉 They usually find interest become interested in learning Bulgarian to make friends and eventually decide to stay and live there.

Business owners who find Bulgaria  a good place for business and  investment

👀👉 Learning a language is an investment that pays off long-term. The effort in improving your speaking and level up to Business Bulgarian is something that foreign business owners coming to Bulgaria are willing to invest time in. So, those who care about the quality of their business in Bulgaria know that investing in language perfection is really worth it. They browse Google search, Facebook, and Youtube looking for valuable content to prepare them for their specific business needs.

English speakers working in Bulgaria

👀👉 those going to🎯 work in Bulgaria like ex-pats, are most often people from other European countries, English, Spanish, Danish speakers, or either coming straight from Canada, Australia, the USA, or even Latin America.
👀👉 those English speakers looking for a different lifestyle in Bulgaria, where life according to them is "not so accelerated", and "the 🌳connection with nature is closer". They choose to live in Bulgaria a place where it is common for Bulgarian families to produce tomatoes and cucumbers in their own garden.

Going to PAZARA (at the public market) in Bulgaria is a must, you need to listen to this audio first and be ready to speak Bulgarian NA PAZARA like a native.

They have a love relationship with Bulgarian. Those married to Bulgarian

👀👉 others got 💑 married to a Bulgarian, or have fallen in love with a Bulgarian boyfriend or a girlfriend once they came to Bulgaria from abroad. As a consequence, they decide to come to Bulgaria and start their life from scratch. Not bad as an idea at all!
But, here is the thing! Be ready to confront your parents in law, guys! The older generation in Bulgaria such as parents and grandparents does not understand English. This language wasn't included in the educational system in Bulgaria 30-40 years ago.
So, if you want to be able to communicate with your parents-in-law, then speaking basic Bulgarian is a must.

Those who like the Bulgarian lifestyle and cuisine

👀👉 the ones who enjoy the food and traditions of Bulgaria are also on the list. Do you want to learn Bulgarian while 🍲cooking Bulgarian dishes? Let me know in the comments below, or email me.
And, of course, many need a certified level of Bulgarian:

Officially certified Bulgarian language level

📚 International students who would like to follow a Bulgarian University Program only available in Bulgarian like Medicine, Biology, etc.

Currently, in 2022, James is speaking Bulgarian fluently living in a small village near Sofia, married to a Bulgarian lady who he fell in love with.
I am so happy I could help James. He is still my student and my friend, and this definitely helped James find his own drive and reason first- fall in love and marry a girl in Bulgaria.

  1. I am from Mexico and my reason to learn Bulgarian is that I live and work in Bulgaria. I'd like to be able to communicate with Bulgarian people in their own language because I believe this is the best way to be able to fully integrate with a new culture, specially if you are planning to stay for a long time.
I love Bulgarian nature and enjoy watching the changes in the seasons. I find very useful the Audio course of Speak Bulgarian with Bela because it gives me the chance to further practice my A1 level of Bulgarian with audio topics such as how to order pizza by phone or how to introduce yourself, etc. Thank you Bela for your amazing materials 😊
